2 LPAs inside PAR may become tropical depression

MANILA, Philippines — A second low pressure area (LPA) has formed inside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Monday afternoon, state meteorologists said.

Both LPAs  have a “medium” likelihood of intensifying into a tropical depression, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

As of 2:00 p.m., the new LPA was spotted 405 kilometers east of Calayan, Cagayan.

The first LPA, which formed on Sunday night, was last spotted 1,220 east of southeastern Luzon.

“Both LPAs have ‘MEDIUM’ potential of developing into tropical depression within the next 24 hours,” Pagasa said in its advisory.

Should both of the LPAs become tropical cyclones, they will  be referred to locally as Dante and Emong.

Severe Tropical Storm Crising, the third tropical cyclone to hit the country this year, enhanced the southwest monsoon which triggered heavy rains in many parts of the country.

The combined effects of Crising and “habagat” resulted in five deaths while seven remain missing, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. /gsg
