Patrick Mahomes’ grandfather, Randy Martin, has died.

The quarterback’s mother, Randi Mahomes, announced her father’s passing in a post on social media on Friday, Feb, 14.

“Hard to find the words of holding my fathers hand as he goes to Heaven,” Randi wrote. “I know he’s in a better place. I love you daddy. Well done, good and faithful servant! Matthew 25:23.”

In the months leading up to her father’s death, Mahomes’ mother, Randi, provided updates about Randy’s health — including that he was entering hospice care, and his excitement over the prospect of watching his grandson play in the Super Bowl.

On Jan. 24, Randi, 52, shared on her Instagram Stories that her father had had entered hospice care. In the social media update, she included a photo of herself and her father, and referenced Bible verse Colossians 3:20, which reads “Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.”

Randi wrote over the photo, “My dad is in hospice and I’m lost for words 🙏🙏🙏.”

The update on his health came after Randy first entered the hospital for an undisclosed reason in September 2024. At the time, his daughter reached out for prayers on X. “Prayer warriors please pray for my daddy,” Randy posted on Sept. 13. “He is in the hospital and is not well.”

Even though Randy had bad days, his daughter explained that “the one thing that he remembers” is the date of the Super Bowl. “I know that it has meant a lot to him,” Randi told PEOPLE at the time. “And I think he’s hanging on because he wants to see his grandson do an amazing thing or just let him play.”

She continued, “I mean, he must be such a proud grandpa, so proud. And my mom was very proud and his other grandparents [were too].”
