It was really painful to witness; A German Shepherd was found wandering the streets of Detroit with her beloved stuffed animal.
Now there is relief that this beautiful dog has been rescued and is safe and sound.
According to a report by FOX 2 in Detroit, concerned locals discovered the dog wandering the streets. Interestingly despite being female they affectionately called her “Nicholas”. Neighbors reported that she became homeless after her owners died.
As news spread about the dogs’ plight, several local organizations such as It Is Pawzable Dog Training, South Lyon Murphy Lost Animal Recovery, Sugar Mutts Dog Grooming, and Almost Home Animal Rescue joined forces to capture the dog and bring her to safety.
“It’s really amazing how everyone comes together as a team,” expressed Katrina Weaver, owner of It Is Pawzable, in an interview with FOX 2.
Fortunately, the rescue efforts proved successful. Home No Kill Rescue announced on May 3rd that they had successfully captured the dog and she was now in their care. In light of her gender being different from the name given by the locals, they decided to rename “Nicholas” to “Nicky”.
“From this point on only positive things await Nikki for life!” The rescue organization wrote on Facebook.
“Thank you for all the support. It’s great to know that Nikki will finally have a home!”
But there is a complication. Nikki was diagnosed with heartworm, which means she will need four weeks of treatment. She now easily handles taking medications and walking on a leash. Once she is fully recovered, the rescue organization will begin searching for her perfect home.
In the meantime, rest assured that Nikki is in her hands…yes, she still has her cherished stuffed toy by her side
We are incredibly relieved and happy that this beautiful dog is now safe and secure with her beloved stuffed animal, let’s hope Nikki makes a full recovery and finds a wonderful new home soon!
